FOOD

There are no resupply opportunities along the Arctic Circle Trail, so we began the trek carrying 11 days of food, which was quite heavy.  To save weight, we brought freeze-dried meals (Mountain House, Backpackers Pantry, Alpine Aire) for every dinner but one and had instant noodles one night. For breakfast, we ate oatmeal pre-mixed with raisins, berries, pecan pieces, flax seed, and powdered milk, and sometimes freeze-dried meals. We also had tea, instant coffee and cocoa, instant congee, pork floss, and instant soup for breakfast and dinner.  The savory instant soup mixes were especially satisfying after a day spent hiking in the cold and rain. We did not use our stove for lunch and instead just had protein and dried fruit bars (on average 3 per person per day), dried mangos, beef jerky, and chocolate.

Luckily we did not need to use a bear canister or otherwise keep food out of the reach of animals. Polar bears are rarely encountered and usually found much farther north.
